Background of the Study
Indigenous knowledge systems encompass traditional practices and ecological insights that have been honed over generations. In Sokoto State, such knowledge plays a critical role in enhancing community resilience against environmental challenges. As climate change accelerates, local communities are increasingly relying on indigenous methods—such as traditional water conservation techniques, medicinal plant usage, and community-led environmental management—to adapt to climate variability and safeguard public health (Lawal, 2023). These traditional practices offer sustainable, low-cost solutions that are deeply rooted in local cultural contexts, making them particularly valuable in regions with limited access to modern technological resources (Okoro, 2024).
However, the rapid pace of modernization and external influences threaten the preservation and application of indigenous knowledge in Sokoto State. The marginalization of traditional practices has resulted in a loss of valuable adaptive strategies, potentially compromising community resilience in the face of climate change. This study aims to investigate the role of indigenous knowledge in climate adaptation and public health, documenting how traditional practices contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change and enhancing health outcomes. By synthesizing qualitative data from local elders and practitioners with quantitative health and environmental metrics, the research seeks to provide evidence-based insights that can inform the integration of indigenous knowledge into formal policy frameworks (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite its recognized value, indigenous knowledge in Sokoto State is increasingly being sidelined due to the predominance of modern technological approaches. This marginalization poses significant challenges for climate adaptation, as the rich repository of traditional practices that have historically supported community resilience is at risk of being lost (Adewale, 2023). The lack of formal recognition and systematic documentation of indigenous methods creates a gap between traditional practices and contemporary climate and public health policies. As a result, communities may lose access to culturally relevant and cost-effective adaptation strategies that could significantly mitigate the impacts of climate change (Chukwu, 2024).
The erosion of indigenous knowledge not only threatens environmental sustainability but also undermines public health, as traditional practices often play a key role in managing local health challenges. The disconnect between modern policy frameworks and indigenous practices limits the development of holistic adaptation strategies. This study aims to address these issues by evaluating the effectiveness of indigenous knowledge in climate adaptation and public health, thereby providing a basis for integrating traditional practices into formal strategies.
